The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is offering a Beginners Quilting Class for adults on Saturday, October 21 and 28, 9:00 to 3:00, at the museum. Participants need to attend both sessions. The class will be taught by SQTM Board members and skilled quilters, Jeanette Bernhardt, Cyndi Hilliard, and Norma West. Teachers in this class provide a supportive, non-threatening learning environment laced with humor and tips to remedy common mistakes. The price for the class is $60.
During the class, students will learn strip cutting using rotary cutters, basic quilt block piecing, and quilt construction including making the “quilt sandwich” which involves putting the quilt top, batting and back together for quilting. Basic machine quilting techniques will be included in the class. Participants should be able to complete most of the quilt in class with some completion to be done at home. Participants must have basic sewing skills and should be able to sew a reasonably straight seam. The museum will furnish rulers, cutters, cutting mats, thread, scissors, etc. Participants may bring personal sewing machines or use machines available at the museum.
Come to the SQTM to register for the class and pick up the supply list. Participants are not registered until payment is received. Space in the class is limited. The SQTM is open on Thurs.through Sat. from 10 until 4 p.m. Call 770-301-2187 for additional information.
Supply information
We will be using a pattern from Villa Rosa Designs, Crimson Glory. The pattern is included in the class fee and will be available at class time.
Fabric Needed – Please read all this information before purchasing or selecting your fabrics.
This pattern calls for fat quarters – a half a yard of fabric cut in half and usually measures 18 inches by 22 inches. However, regular ¼ yd may be used if you cannot find fat quarters. Hobby Lobby and Walmart carry a limited amount of fat quarters, but may not offer the variety needed for this quilt. Joanne’s Fabric Store has a better variety. You may also order coordinated fat quarters on line, but delivery in time for class could be a problem. So I suggest Joanne’s or purchase ¼ yd pieces at your favorite fabric store. The fabrics you choose should be 100% cotton, usually 42-44 inches wide. Avoid polyesters, loose weave cottons, and poly/cotton blends.
For the selected pattern, you will need
-8 fat quarters – two light ones for the center blocks and six coordinating fabrics that are medium to dark. Or ¼ cuts of 8 coordinating fabrics. *if you would like to simplify fabric selection, use one light for centers and borders – you will need 1 7/8 yard of light fabric for this option and 6 coordinating fabrics for blocks.
1 3/8 yard of a light fabric for the border
5/8 yd. for binding.
Three (3) yards of fabric will be needed for the backing of the quilt – choose a coordinating color or muslin for the back. You will need batting that is approximately 60 inches by 72 inches. Batting can be purchased by the yard or packaged at any fabric store. If you are overwhelmed by choices available, I like 100% cotton Warm and Natural. You do not need to have the backing and batting until the final class.
Thread supplied by the Museum for class use is either off white or gray, if you think another color would be better, please bring your own thread. The Museum will provide sewing kits with scissors, thread, needles, pins, rotary cutters, and other notions that you will need. Cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters will be available for your use. However, if you prefer to use your own, feel free to bring them. Please let the museum staff know in advance, if you need to use a machine belonging to the museum.
